Colin Montgomerie is facing a potentially massive selection problem ahead of the Ryder Cup on October 1.
The European captain currently has three key players – Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington and Justin Rose
– all requiring wild cards for the biennial event against the United States at Celtic
Manor.
The trio all missed the cut at the USPGA Championship where champion Martin Kaymer sealed his place on the team in emphatic style.
Crucially, Paul Casey
– another player pivotal to Europe’s hopes of regaining the trophy – fired a closing 69 to take him into a tie for 12th place and enough points to promote him into the final qualifying position on the European Points table.
However, with Casey – like the other three – deciding to stay in America for the FedEx Cup play-offs rather than playing in the final Ryder Cup
qualifying tournament at Gleneagles in two weeks’ time, all four may need a captain’s pick – with Monty having only having three at his disposal.
Miguel Angel Jimenez is also vulnerable to a late surge from the likes of Edoardo Molinari, whose brother and fellow World Cup winner Francesco has virtually guaranteed his place on the team.
Montgomerie
is known to be a big fan of Alvaro Quiros, the big-hitting Spaniard who has also slipped out of automatic qualification but could play his way back into the side at Gleneagles – or earn a wildcard ahead of one of the others.
