About The Hague

The Hague is Holland’s 3rd largest city. Although it gives an outward appearance of being a full-fledged city, it’s still known today as ‘the largest village of Europe’. It sits in the west of the country in Southern Holland. Amsterdam may be the national capital, but The Hague has always been the seat of National Government and the official residence of the Dutch monarchs. 3 royal palaces grace this beautiful city. ‘s-Gravenhage, to give the city its full name, or more commonly Den Haag, is a cosmopolitan centre bursting with style and culture. It’s full of parks and elegant homes. You will find many museums as well as some hidden gems. The popular beach resorts of Scheveningen and Kijkduin are only 3km from the city. Scheveningen Harbour is not only a busy fishing port but also a lively base for pleasure boats. You will also find many restaurants around this area. The nightlife in The Hague is quite subdued, but the bar and cafe culture is buzzing, with much choice, from the traditional brown cafes to the ultra modern designer places.
There are quite a few gay establishments in The Hague, although you will find that most of the bars and restaurants are gay-friendly anyway. The gay bars are catering for gays, lesbians, bi-sexuals, transexuals and straight open-minded friends. There are places which run ladies only nights. The best place to find out about The Hague’s gay-scene is the Basta Rainbow Centre above the Basta Cafe. All hotels listed are gay-friendly. The bars are mainly gay establishments, with a couple of good gay-friendly options. The restaurants are all gay-friendly.
