Rome is Italy’s capital, largest and most populous city. The city of Rome has a history dating back over 2500 years, as it was the centre of the Roman Empire. It managed to avoid too much damage during World War II and because of this still has many of its unique architecture intact. It’s listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. There are the ancient sites such as the famous landmark The Colosseum. There’s fantastic museums, theatres, opera houses and much more to keep you busy while discovering this eternal city.

Rome has been known for homosexual relationships since ancient times, in fact, it was the norm back then. Cave paintings have been discovered dating back more than 8000 years, depicting sex between men. However, in more recent history, Italian society has been strongly influenced by the Catholic Church and The Vatican which prevented tolerance in more modern times. Rome does indeed have a huge gayscene, which has flourished over the last 10 years. It has many bars, clubs and saunas, and it’s common to see same sex couples walking hand in hand. Italians are more affectionate and physical than other people in their general friendships, and even straight men regularly walk down the street with their arms around each other – however, kissing anywhere other than on the cheeks at greetings and goodbyes will certainly draw attention. There is still some homophobia around Rome, especially with the religious and older generation. If you travel to smaller towns around the area, expect less tolerance.
