About Naples

Naples is the largest city in Southern Italy. The capital of the Campania region, it’s a beautiful city which was founded in the 6th century by the Greeks, enlarged by the Romans and as a result is steeped in history and stunning architecture. The historic centre of Naples is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From Naples you can see Mount Vesuvius – a volcano which was responsible for the destruction of Pompeii in 79AD. The ruins left in Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum give you an insight into what life was like around this time, and if you’ve the time, should definitely be on your list of places to visit. Also nearby are the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida, which can be easily reached and are well worth visiting.
Naples is more tolerant of the gay culture than other cities in Southern Italy. However, you will find the younger generation more tolerant than their older relations. Same sex couples walking hand in hand is not so much the norm here. The gay scene is not especially out in the open, but it is there. There’s a small local scene around the university area. The lack of gay venues means that that the scene relies on gay nights in other venues. These do happen regularly and the venues do change quite often. The locals are the best to ask about what’s on, where and when. Nearby Capri is one of the most gay-friendly places and has been on the gaydar for centuries. There are still only a few clubs here, but the beaches are at the heart of gay Capri.
All the hotels we’ve listed are gay-friendly. The bars, clubs and restaurants are listed because they’re nice venues with great food. There are so many great restaurants here, the hardest bit is deciding where to eat!
