About Belfast

Belfast is the capital city of Northern Ireland, and the second largest city in the island of Ireland. Belfast has a long history, and not all of it political. It has it’s own stone henge monument ‘The Giant’s Ring’ dating back to 3000BC. The famous Titanic was built here in 1911. Belfast is made up of 5 areas: The Cathedral Quarter, which is the city centre and where you will find most of its vibrant nightlife. Queen’s Quarter in the south, here you will find the university and the Botanical Gardens. Gaeltacht Quarter in the west, has many historic sights along both the Shankill and Falls Roads, including the famous wall murals. Titanic Quarter in the east, which as you may have guessed, is on the waterfront. And finally, North Belfast has fabulous views across Belfast Lough and on a clear day you can see all the way to Scotland.
Belfast’s gay scene is thriving and it’s safe to say that Belfast is one of the more liberal minded cities in Europe. The gay-scene is located just north of the city centre in the Cathedral Quarter. There’s a lot of choice of gay and gay-friendly pubs and restaurants. There are also many ‘gay’ nights in different venues. The lesbian scene is as big as the gay scene here. The annual Gay Pride Parade is very popular also, and is on the first Saturday of August.
