About Antwerp

Antwerp is Belgium’s second largest city – known by the locals as the Metropolis. It’s the second largest harbour of Europe. The real urban deal, it’s a refreshingly down to earth yet vivacious cosmopolitan city blessed with numerous architectural highlights, fashionable shops, dazzling monuments as well as great bars and restaurants. Antwerp, home of the Flemish Baroque master Rubens, not only has a wealth of outstanding museums, picturesque galleries, sculpted streets and beautiful architecture, but is also laced with lovely greenery and urban haunts. Also known for being the Diamond Centre of the World – you can visit the diamond district around the Railway Station. Its culture, history and vibrant nightlife along with its excellent shopping make this a wonderful place to visit.
Antwerp is fast becoming the destination of choice for the gay visitor to mainland Europe. You’ll often hear the term Holebi used for the gay scene in Flanders, as the word Gay is often used exclusively to apply to gay men. Unlike many cities Antwerp doesn’t have a single "Gay Village", with gay venues being spread throughout the City. One area, which was previously the gay centre, is around Van Schoonhovenstraat (known locally as "Rue Vaseline"); this still has a number of venues located there. During the week the scene tends to be fairly quiet although events do still happen. At the weekend, however, Gay Antwerp really erupts into action. Visitors can be easily confused, as the Belgians tend to go out a lot later – often midnight or later – and continue partying until the morning. It may be a good idea to get a couple of hours sleep before going out in Gay Antwerp on a Friday or Saturday Night. Antwerp might just be Brussels’ wilder sister.
