About Mexico City

Mexico City is Mexico’s capital and most populous city – it’s one of the World’s largest cities. Situated at an altitude of 2,240 metres/7,349 feet. It sits in a highland valley surrounded by mountains. It was originally built as Tenochtitlan by the Aztecs in 1325, and was the capital of the Aztec Empire. Unfortunately there is nothing left of the original city. Mexico City is a passionate, cosmopolitan, sprawling metroplis. It’s full of urban energy and historic and cultural treasures. You will find enduring traditions that date back to pre-Hispanic civilisations and a strong sense of Latin culture shaped by Spanish influence; it’s an endearing mix of the majestically ancient with the irresistibly new. It’s a feast of culture, dining and shopping. The city has sidewalk cafes and cantinas; bazaars and boutiques; pyramids, monuments and museums; and a multitude of entertainment options. And when you’ve had your fill of the city, it’s easy to explore memorable towns and historic national landmarks only a couple of hours away in any direction.
Mexico City has a huge and active gay population, although generally the gay scene is a bit more discreet and underground than in other major North American metropolises. The city won ‘Gay Destination of the Year’ by the PlanetOut Travel Awards, which recognise gay-friendly tourist destinations. Much of the nightlife, including many gay bars and clubs, is located in the Zona Rosa – ‘Pink Zone’ – however, there are many worthwhile places in Condesa and Roma as well. Most of the gay bars and clubs we’ve found, seem to cater for the gay men rather than lesbians. All hotels listed are either gay owned and run or gay-friendly.
