About Sydney

Sydney is Australia’s largest city. It’s the State Capital of New South Wales and was the site of the first British Colony in Australia in 1788. Situated in Australia’s south-east coast, it is noted for its beautiful sandy beaches - Bondi Beach being the most famous. Also known for the famous and iconic Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, these are images most people would instantly recognise as Sydney. This is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and it’s these cultures which have given Sydney its diverse and highly cosmopolitan atmosphere. There is much to do here; there are many festivals, theatres and national parks, as well as the beautiful scenery only a country like Australia can offer. Expect to be highly-liberated in the sunshine.
Sydney is the gay and lesbian capital of Australia. You will not find a city that’s much gayer! This city wears it’s queer heart on its sleeve. Walking hand in hand with your partner here is more than acceptable. You can sunbathe, surf, go to the opera, dine in comfort with your partner and go clubbing – all in one day! Many cities only muster one gay village. Sydney has plenty. The traditional centre of queer life has been Oxford Street in Darlinghurst. Oxford Street is the heart of the largest gay scene in the Southern Hemisphere. Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay have become the home to the smart party set. Further up Oxford Street, you’ll find Paddington – home to a lot of chi-chi metrogays. Further inland you’ll find Erskinville, this has a very villagey feel and is being gentrified by an army of gay nesters. Most cities can’t muster much of a lesbian scene, however Sydney has an entire suburb of girls who like girls, from Newtown to Leichhardt, this area is known as Dyke Heart. Further north is Byron Bay – a laid-back and friendly coastal town popular with gay and lesbian travellers around new year when the locals put on Rainbow Circus, a wild dance party.
All hotels and venues listed are gay-friendly, but in Sydney, just about everywhere is!
