About Hobart

Hobart

Hobart is Tasmania’s capital and Australia’s second oldest city. The city of Hobart is located in the state’s south-east, on the estuary of the Derwent River, at the foot of mighty Mount Wellington which dominates the skyline. The island state of Tasmania is known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. It’s a place of wild and beautiful landscapes; friendly, welcoming people; a pleasant, temperate climate; wonderful wine and food; a rich history and a relaxed island lifestyle. It has a stunning harbour along with historic buildings, making it one of the most attractive Australian cities. There are no shortages of fine dining venues and busy happening bars.

Hobart has only recently become known for its gay-friendly and open-minded attitude. It took a while, Tasmania was the last to legalise homosexuality in Australia in 1997. Gay law reform transformed the state from an embarrassing backwater that had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the United Nations to a world leader in acceptance of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. The small gay community here is highly active and very much still establishing itself. There is a growing number of events and activities. The Queen’s Ball, held each June, is the biggest night of the social calendar. Gay Pride is held in the first week of March. Come on down to the most southern part of Australia and discover a paradise ready for your enjoyment.
