Colombo is one of the most diverse cities in Asia. It’s a city alive with life and noise. The Fort district of Colombo is the country’s Business Centre and east of there lies the colourful Pettah Bazaar District.

Homosexuality is illegal in Sri Lanka, left over from colonial rule, it’s a British sodomy law. Punishment ranges from a fine to 10 years in prison. In certain situations, cross-dressing is tolerated. You will find no gay venues here! Despite being illegal there is small and active gay scene in Sri Lanka, although most of it is via the internet. There are sometimes ‘gay parties’ held in different venues, and it may be an idea to get to know some Sri Lankans via the internet before you head here, and find out what goes on. If you get lucky here, be very careful! Since the 1990s their have been public efforts made to advance the rights of LGBTI Sri Lankans. Columbo holds an annual Gay Pride Festival, and it is hoped that the law will be changed in time. After all, this is not so much an anti-gay culture, this is a country where the law over rules people’s attitudes.
