About Jamaica

Jamaica is the largest of the Caribbean Islands, and has all the gorgeous resorts you’d expect. Kingston is the island’s capital and largest city. Kingston is not the sort of resort paradise to be found on the north coast but it offers a great deal more to the traveller who seeks to gain more than a sun tan from a holiday. Montego Bay is Jamaica’s second city in size and importance, but it’s the island’s tourism capital. Negril and Ocho Rios are other popular areas. There’s fun to be had in them all, and of course the scenery is stunning.
Jamaica is an adamantly homophobic nation. Homosexual intercourse between men is illegal, and antigay hysteria is a staple of musical lyrics. Homosexuality is a subject that evokes extreme reactions among Jamaicans, and it is difficult to hold a serious discussion on the topic. Most Jamaican gays are still in the closet. Nonetheless, many hoteliers are gay or gay-tolerant, and you should not be put off from visiting the island. Just don’t expect to be able to display your sexuality openly without an adverse reaction.
There are no gay bars or restaurants in Jamaica. We have found one gay owned hotel and one gay-friendly hotel.
